Bringing a novel engine embedded in a unique frame, the virgin model of CCM Spitfire was unveiled by Skunkwerx. The sales growth of the CCM Spitfire shot by 150% last year. It is only fitting that the manufacturer goes back to the drawing board and present something new: The Skunkwerx’ department will head the creation of a new line of bikes. The first bike from the designer is the Spitfire, which was launched at the Carole Nash MCN London Motorcycle show.
According to the manufacturer at CCM, Spitfire is the collaborative effort of a niche group of mechanical engineers and designers who worked on a pet project in their spare time. Similar to the authentic Lockheed Martin Skunkworks, Spitfire production will transcend the limitations set by the bureaucracy and budgets.
The most appealing view of the entire bike is its frame. The frame is constructed from T45 Steel - the steel which is similar to the one used for the construction of Supermarine Spitfire Fighter plane’s fuselage. The production of the intricate design of the frame was made possible by the expert hands of master welder Ted Unwin, a name written in history for his involvement in the iconic Alan Clew’s Competition Machines back in the 1970s. It would be natural to assume that holding a trellis frame so detailed, the weight of the bike would be heavy, however, astonishingly, the weight is light, at 121kg dry.
Looking at the specifications of the bike, starting at the frame, it is hand made in T45 steel trellis. The suspension is fitted with WP 48mm USD fork which in diameter measures 150mm and offers complete adjustment at both front and rear. The brakes on the bikes are standard Brembo of 240mm disc and 320mm front. Seat height is at 830mm and the total fuel capacity of the flat tracker is 14L. The pricing is yet to be disclosed.
The engine on the Spitfire is a single 600cc which delivers a power output of 55bhp at 58Nm torque. Going by the data available in the literature on bikes of similar dimensions, the similarities between the CCM Spitfire and the SWM RS650R cannot be ignored. This model was developed back when BMW still owned Husqvarna. The flat track look of the bike is exuded by the sleek 19’’ wheels.
Although not in the same department as the Skunkwerx series, a limited edition ride christened to GP450 SR will soon go into production. Only 25 bikes in this series will be manufactured by CCM of the SR model, meant only for sale in the U.K.
The most popular bike from the CCM factories, the GP450, will still be manufactured and sold. The inclusion of the SR model and the Spitfire will not affect the sale of GP450. Since GP450 is not Euro 4 compliant, it is set for an overhaul. Re-released as GP600 Adventure, GP450 is offered a second lease to run a successful inning. The engine on the future models will be modelled based on the Spitfire.
