Thinking of selling your motorbike? Brilliant, because we buy any Buell! This sister brand of Harley-Davidson may have had something of a rocky ride since its establishment by ex-Harley engineer Erik Buell, but it retains a strong fan following to this day.
Buell bikes began life as thoroughbred machines for the AMA Formula 1 motorcycle road racing championship in the 1980s, but before the decade was out, Buell had turned his talents for raceway design to the open road, using engines supplied by Harley-Davidson. For more than 25 years, the Buell-Harley partnership produced high performance sportsters designed to please the thrill-seekers. The RR 1000 Battletwin was the first to make the transition from the race circuit to the road. As the design was refined, the super-light, super-fast Lightening series, which included a streamlined chassis, larger tank and cylinder heads to improve brake horsepower, became popular with those of us who like to live fast.
By the 1990s, Buell’s sports models eventually evolved into the Cyclone and Thunderbolt sports-tourer series which had a heavier V-Twin engine, wider seats, pillion space, saddlebags and taller handlebars for more comfortable endurance rides. The 2000s saw the Buell/Harley line come to an end with the Lightning, Firebolt and Ulysses XB Series that included a variety of models suited to street or off-road riding. In October 2009, came the sad final announcement from Harley-Davidson that it would discontinue the Buell product line as it sought to focus on the Harley brand. Erik Buell duly returned to his roots in the 2010s, producing high-performance race bikes under the banner of Erik Buell Racing, an independent company that went defunct in April 2015. However, amid murmurings that the firm may soon be re-established with a manufacturing base in Buell’s spiritual home of East Troy, Wisconsin, it seems that the brand’s memorable story may not be over just yet.
