A short history of Kawasaki

The Kawasaki name may today be absolutely synonymous with the world of bikes, but the Japanese public multinational corporation from which the motorcycle division springs is also known for its manufacture of heavy equipment, aerospace and defence products.

Indeed, despite Kawasaki being able to trace its history back to 1896, the brand’s Aircraft Company did not begin developing a motorcycle engine until after the Second World War. By 1953, mass production began of an air-cooled, 148 cc, OHV, four-stroke single cylinder engine, and the following year, Kawasaki Aircraft produced its first complete motorcycle under its Meihatsu subsidiary.

Later motorcycles were badged Meguro, following Kawasaki’s purchase of the ailing manufacturer in 1960, before it eventually began producing bikes entirely under its own name.

It didn’t take too long for the sporting credentials of Kawasaki bikes to be widely recognised. The B8M ‘Red Tank’ built specifically for motocross championships and the H1R Racer, which took Kawasaki’s first race crown at the 1971 Grand Prix, inspired riders and engineers alike.

The increasingly iconic stature of Kawasaki only grew at an ever-faster pace from that point onwards. When the infamous Kawasaki Ninja sports series was eventually launched in the 1980s, it became such a hit with road and race riders everywhere that decades later, upgraded and improved versions are still in production.

But the Kawasaki brand is not all about pant-wetting speed. The Vulcan cruiser series, for example, gives entry-level and experienced easy riders a cool, comfortable and fun ride and now that Kawasaki has added the J300 Scooter to its range, those who just need to pootle around town, can.
